50 Shades of Grey – The Creative Spinoffs

Whatever you think about the Shades of Grey trilogy, what is clear is that it has unleashed waves of creativity. Karen Lotter (ahem!) feels out a few of the funniest.

All kudos to Erika Leonard James – who initially wrote fan fiction under the pen name “Snowqueens Icedragon” (I believe she still does).

She didn’t just write three erotic books, she generated a tidal wave. Time Magazine has included her in its 2012 list of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World.

I’m not at all interested in the whips ‘n chains “creative lovin” copy-cat books that every female writer on earth seems to be engaged on.

What I am so enjoying is all the humour, especially the cartoons.

Fifty Shades of Cookery

In keeping with the sensual, a new parody of the best-selling trilogy that teaches you how to cook: Fifty Shades of Chicken. This cookbook,  complete with trussed bird on the cover, is due out November 13, promises rather tempting recipes for “Bacon Bound Wings,” “Chicken with a Lardon” (ouch!) and “Mustard-Spanked Chicken”, taking cookbookdom (down) to a whole new level.

Here’s an excerpt:
“I want you to see this. Then you’ll know everything. It’s a cookbook,” he says and opens to some recipes, with colour photos. “I want to prepare you, very much.” This isn’t just about getting me hot till my juices run clear, and then a little rest. There’s pulling, jerking, stuffing, trussing. Fifty preparations. He promises we’ll start out slow, with wine and a good oiling…Holy crap. “I will control everything that happens here,” he says. “You can leave anytime, but as long as you stay, you’re my ingredient.” I’ll be transformed from a raw, organic bird into something — what? Something delicious.”

Well, what else did you expect from a book with the three words “Fifty Shade of” in the title?
